Circle of Security Course
The Circle of Security emphasises the importance of a secure attachment as a foundation for a child's emotional well-being. It recognises that a child's ability to explore the world and form healthy relationships is deeply influenced by the availability and responsiveness of their primary caregiver.
What is the Circle of Security?
The Circle of Security is a visual and relational map designed to enhance the understanding of parent-child attachment dynamics. Attachment is the lasting emotional connection that a child establishes with a specific person providing a source of safety, comfort, soothing, and joy.
It is rooted in attachment theory; the circle represents the delicate balance between a child's exploration of the world and their need for a secure base provided by a caregiver. By creating a safe and supportive environment, children can confidently explore, knowing they have a reliable figure to return to in times of uncertainty or distress. Children with secure attachments are more likely to show greater resilience in the face of stress, forge healthier relationships, and enter school with a readiness to learn.
The Circle of Security (COS) course is aimed at parents of Tamariki ages 6 months and upwards.
The goal of this course is to support parents to develop in their children a secure attachment. It does this by exploring in depth how we were parented, and how this led to our behaviour today as parents. Specifically, how this impacts our ability to support our children in the organisation and holding of their strong feelings and emotions, and in their secure exploration of the world. It is an in-depth and emotionally intense course, requiring full concentration, thus children cannot be in the space.
This class is run by Liora Noy, a registered trained COS International facilitator.
Location: Online Zoom Class
Cost: This course usually comes at a cost of upwards of $650. You can take this course for FREE as a member of The Village Community.
"I can honestly say the Circle of Security of course has changed my parenting journey. Being a parent is such an amazing, but challenging job. One that you never really feel prepared for. The Circle of Security provided a safe space to reflect on the challenges of being a parent, taught me about understanding my children's needs and helped me problem-solve some of the unique challenges I face as a parent. The course was so impactful that I've now hired a parenting coach that I see monthly as a way to continue what was started on the Circle of Security Course. Just imagine the impact on our communities if people had more guidance on how to be effective parents! Talk about a useful investment!" - Nick
I really benefitted from this course as it helped me recognize that it's okay to let your child explore the world/their surroundings on their own without hovering over them and not giving them the space, they need to discover these things but also being there for them when they needed that reassurance and support. One part that stuck with me was when the baby was crying and instead of trying to distract them and saying you're ok, letting them feel and work through the emotions and acknowledging them. Seeing it from the baby's perspective was very eye opening. I also wouldn't want someone shaking a rattle and telling me I'm ok when I'm having a cry! - Truong
